I’m so happy you are here. My name is Rebecca Summers and I live in Austin with my sweet husband and pup. I have been in Central Texas for almost 20 years and exist with autoimmunity/chronic illness; I can empathize if you exist with or suspect you may exist with autoimmunity or chronic illness as well. Personally and professionally, I strive to be anti-racist, anti-oppressive, non-pathologizing, and inclusive of all intersections of race, culture, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. My aim is to assume nothing and simply get to know you as a unique individual deeply worthy of being known, accepted, and supported.

In our therapeutic relationship, my role is to be an empathetic guide and support and to create an environment of safety, understanding, and empowerment. My therapeutic approach is grounded in humanistic psychology meaning it is warm, compassionate, non-judgmental, and genuine. I work holistically to help facilitate re-connection with your innate cognitive, emotional, and somatic wisdom and intuition. I am an integrative and eclectic counselor that incorporates different approaches, skills, and techniques based on your specific needs.

I am trained in and use: IFS (Internal Family Systems or “parts work”), Coherence Therapy, AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), emotionally-connected experiential therapy, IPNB (interpersonal neurobiology), somatic experiencing, attachment theory, and mindfulness. I believe therapy is, in large part, about unlearning and working through internal barriers that have made living authentically, in deep connection with yourself and others, challenging. More simply put, I am going to take into account all aspects of who you are while being collaborative, curious, and compassionate to help you explore deeper meanings and root causes of your pain and patterns so that you can return to a more aligned and authentic version of yourself and life.

I hold a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, am a Nationally Certified Counselor, and am a Licensed Professional Counselor (License #84220).

One of my favorite poems by Morgan Harper Nichols reads: “Empathy: Let me hold the door for you. I may have never walked in your shoes, but I can see your soles are worn, your strength is torn under the weight of a story I have never lived before. Let me hold the door for you. After all you’ve walked through, It’s the least I can do.”

My desire is to not only hold the door for you but to sit with you in the depths and help carry some of the weight of all that you have survived and overcome. I know life can feel so overwhelming sometimes, as if it is one constant struggle after another; and it may feel especially so right now. Counseling can help with that overwhelm, and can help shift the hardly surviving, to thriving, among many other things. It takes a lot of courage to seek support and find a therapist. I am so proud of you for making it this far. So, searching soul, are you ready to continue your healing journey? It would be an honor to be a part of your journey.

Let’s do this!
